This is a script that allows you to tile geometry around a plane.

The script is very crude as you can see, but it does the job.

Instructions

First create the "base" plane.

Scatter your geometry around  (scattered geo should have freezed transformations at 0.0.0)

You can use the edges mode which will tile only the geometry that needs to tile across to the other side.

To use the "full tile" mode adjust the threshold. That tells the script how much of what you choosed to tile is far away from the edges and therefore delete it. The larger the threshold, the more geo (that geo further away from the plane edge) is deleted. Only the geo closest to the edge will be kept. That means, if the threshold is 1, pretty much all of the geo will be kept.

Select the geo you want tiled, hit "tile geo" and you are done.

Bake the high poly with your favourite software, or even just in Maya. You can create tilable surfaces, atlases, height maps for ZBrush or substance, or anywhere you see fit.
